2023- New Year, and New Block Challenge!

2023- New Year, and New Block Challenge!

Yes! It’s a new year, so we get to start a new Block Challenge! I am excited for this year because I have picked the perfect fabrics to use. I chose 10 prints from my Fable fabric collection. They look beautiful together. Mossy greens, soft pinks and corals with a touch of gray. I will have kits available if you want to join me—they will be up on my website in a few days. Kits will include enough fabric to make all 16 blocks.

2023 Block Challenge Kit

First, maybe I should explain how this Block Challenge works. Sixteen Riley Blake Designers have each designed a 10” block pattern, and they are all FREE. The patterns will be release one at a time—each Tuesday, except for the last Tuesday of each month which will be a break. We will finish up in May with the Setting pattern for putting all the blocks together in one quilt. You can follow along—download each pattern and sew it up with your choice of fabrics. Just one block a week is very do-able! I sure you will love the fabrics I am using, and you can get the kit from my website to use these same beautiful fabrics. Here are a few helpful links.

So now that you know how it works, I want to show you my block!

This is Block #2 —Fanfare. (Don’t worry, I’ll get back to Block #1 and catch you all up next week!) But for now, it’s my turn.

Fanfare Block

This block uses 4 identical corner unit.

corner units

The units are made using half-square-triangles. Once you have all your HSTs sewn and trimmed, they go together in rows. Pressing is the key to getting nice sharp points and matching seams. Press away from the white on the HSTs, and alternate the seams in each row so they can nest together.

Rotate the units around the center, and add the setting pieces, sewing together in rows.

The finished block is 10 1/2” square. I hope you can join me in sewing a block each week. Even I should be able to find time to do this!!

Happy Quilting!

Jill
